how to blog

November 28th, 2007 · 4 Comments

For some reason, even though I’ve been writing on the web for ages and generally writing for audiences for much longer, I have a sort of internal monologue that goes on everytime I blog. It goes a little something like this…

  • What am I going to write about? Is it interesting, heartfelt, funny and personal?
  • Don’t forget to spellcheck!!
  • Find the perfect image to accompany the story — they are worth a thousand words, afterall.
  • Ask myself, do I really want to do this?
  • Hit publish, take a deep breath & wait…
  • Wonder if people are reading, hope for comments, check google analytics for traffic and visit maps. obsess about seo, referrals and tags.
  • Check back daily, try to find time for new posts, try and remember that weird idea from the other day that was funny
  • Sharpen the intellectual knife for cutting observations on modern society, politics and the latest gadgetry. Aim to stir up controversy without getting flamed

It’s fun stuff…

to me, you’re only as good as your last post, so every time i write a new post it’s like the first time all over again! :) so some of what you wrote definitely crossed my mind. i’m constantly fretting about stats, the next post (the latest post barely published an hour or two ago but i’m thinking of the next already!), the comments… but i love blogging! my blog’s me baby. :P

SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is the art & science of how search engines (like google) find your site. If they find your site and someone visits, this is called a referral (because they’re being referred by another site). Tags are a way of organizing content by including relevant keywords around text or images. For example, a picture of a car may have the tags “chevy, corvette, 1976″ to provide context. It’s a way to increase the likelihood of being found by users and search engines. Good questions.
